Pulp III—A Short Biography of the Banished Book

For the 59th Venice Biennale, Singapore Pavilion presents the works of Shubigi Rao through the curation of Ute Meta Bauer. The first work, a book called ‘Pulp III: An Intimate Inventory of the Banished Book’ (2022) is the culmination of Rao’s 10-year project ‘Pulp’ which takes inspiration from book destruction and how it impacts the future of knowledge. The book contains images and writings about books, libraries and communities, together with research on Singapore and Venice, two places with rich histories of prints. Its purpose is to challenge the hegemonic flow of information and to provide strategies to counter it. The second work is ‘Talking Leaves’, a film that depicts the rescued books from genocide survivors and a now-defunct archive of women partisans. This exhibition is also extended online where people can read an e-version of ‘Pulp III’ and see the stills of Rao’s film ‘Talking Leaves’.

Shubigi Rao’s exhibition is commissioned by the National Arts Council, Singapore and currently showing at Singapore Pavilion in Arsenale – Sale d’Armi, Venice, Italy for the 59th Venice Biennale. Click here to read more and visit the online extension of the exhibition.
