The third edition of Art Jakarta Gardens will take place from today, 23 April till 28 April at Hutan Kota by Plataran, Jakarta. 23 galleries are taking part, and there are 30 outdoor sculptures and installations for a unique experience. In this preview article, we hear from 4 participating galleries: A+ Works of Art, Art Agenda, ROH Projects Projects and Srisasanti Gallery in our preview.

A+ Works of Art

A+ Works of Art will present works by artists from various parts of Southeast Asia: Amin Taasha, Apichaya Wannakit, Chong Kim Chiew, Ella Wijt, Kentaro Hiroki, Than Sok and Unchalee Anantawat. Ella Wijt is a Bandung-based artist who works in painting and site-specific installation, and explores themes such as personal experience, mythology and womanhood. One of the works on show is ‘Late After Delights’, an acrylic and dermatograph on canvas work. Amin Taasha, who grew up in Kabul and now lives in Yogyakarta, will show ‘A believers dream in the eyes of a friend’, among others.

Hariz Raof, Gallery Manager, says, “We are delighted to be participating in this year's Art Jakarta Gardens! From my experience, the crowd in Jakarta is curious about what’s new and exciting with artists and galleries.” He adds, “I look forward to seeing how the crowd will gravitate towards the range of experimental practices, stories, techniques and expressions of these artists. Furthermore, in collaboration with RUBANAH Underground Hub, we are delighted to be showcasing Kurt D. Peterson & Ella Wijt’s ‘Pilgrims’ installation at the Sculpture Garden.”

Art Agenda

Art Agenda will present ‘Healing’, featuring the works of Anastasia Astika, Eric Pradana, Mohammad Taufiq (Emte), Ferdy Thaeras, Firman Lie, Gilang Mustofa, Gregorius Sidharta, Hendra Priyadhani, Khrisna Dwi Putra, Kurt D. Peterson, Ramadhyan Putri Pertiwi, Rega Ayundya Putri, Sarita Ibnoe, Wanti Amelia, Wisnu Auri and Yohan Liliyani. “Art serves as a powerful medium for sincere self expression, and its therapeutic aspects have gained popularity recently, positioning art as a means of healing,” says Stella Wenny, Gallery Director. “Our showcase of more than 40 artworks by emerging Indonesian artists explore the concept through each artist's unique interpretation of the term, offering viewers a diverse array of perspectives on recovery, rejuvenation, and the human experience.” As part of the outdoor presentation, they will also show the works of Gregorius Sidharta Soegijo (1932 - 2006), a pioneer Indonesian modern artist. He is known to seamlessly blend modern and traditional styles in both form and texture, such as in the work ‘Ayah dan Anak (Father and Child)’, where a father stands strong, carrying his child on his shoulder, to honour fatherly love, capturing its tenderness and protective nature.

Srisasanti Gallery

For the first three days of the fair, “Woman in the Modern World” by J. A. Pramuhendra will be on show. It reflects on his personal life, particularly his spiritual journey as the son of his mother, who is his most cherished person. On a broader scale, the series reflects upon women's empowerment, to explore the roles that each woman assumes in life. From the fourth day, the gallery will switch to a group exhibition of their represented artists. Georgius Amadeo, Assistant Director, says “Art Jakarta Gardens has brought about a new and fresh demographic of appreciators for our gallery, while also providing a more social setting for us to meet our collectors in contrast to the main Art Jakarta fair.”

ROH Projects Projects

Roh Projects Projects will be presenting ‘Garden’ (2024), part of Aurora Arazzi’s latest site-specific duo presentation alongside Luqi Lukman. In an echoing of the premise of Art Jakarta Gardens, ‘Garden’ is based on a small notebook with a garden drawn on it, from which an abstract paper sculpture emerges. All the works in the presentation are made from paper-based material that the artist then manipulates, through drawing, cutting, folding, sewing, stacking and so on, with other components, such as thread and found objects. It is the artist’s new organic approach to art-making, guided by her instincts rather than focusing on a fully formed outcome.
