Art & Market (A&M) is pleased to launch Art & Market Small Rooms (AMSR), which celebrates distinct practices of emerging artists and writers. The inaugural AMSR series comprises three pairs of digital and physical small rooms, each showcasing new and existing artworks by Singapore artists Jevon Chandra, Khor Ting Yan and Samuel Xun, who were selected from an open call in December 2021.

AMSR was inspired by the long-running A&M’s Fresh Faces series, which takes the form of monthly articles that spotlight emerging artists from the region. Since its conception in January 2020, the team has received feedback from featured artists that the interviews have helped them to figure out their start in the industry, such as sustaining a studio practice, proposing and executing an exhibition, and establishing connections with others in the community.

Building upon this, the AMSR programme offers group workshops and individual consultations with the artists to work on their website, biography and statement, and also offers advice for pricing their artworks for sale and putting together a press kit. Through these educational sessions, A&M aims to provide assistance to emerging artists develop their careers. These efforts culminate in the small rooms you are about to see, which have been discussed and refined throughout the programme.

As part of AMSR, early-career writers from the region were also selected from an open call in February 2022 to respond critically and creatively to the small rooms, from writing previews and reviews to composing poems or other forms of literary responses. We have selected 9 writers, who will each respond to the AMSR of one artist. They are:

  • Jonathan Chan, Miriam Devaprasana and Amar Shahid for Jevon’s AMSR

  • Louise Crocker, Kristi Lim and Elizabeth Low for Ting Yan’s AMSR, and

  • Sean Wang, Wong Kar Mun Nicole and Adinda Yuwono for Samuel’s AMSR.

The writers will first respond to the digital iteration of AMSR, and their written works will be uploaded in the respective AMSR by 21 March 2022.

We expect to open the physical interaction of AMSR in Singapore in early April. More details to come soon. In the meantime, enjoy these digital presentations! The artworks are also available for purchase on A&M Marketplace. We look forward to your support and feedback. For enquiries, please write to us at info@artandmarket.net.
